In this course, students will learn basic conversational communication in American Sign Language, including:
- Introductions
- Sharing basic Information about yourself
- Yes/No questions
- Basic ASL grammar
- Simple affirmative and negative sentences, and related facial expressions & body language
- The manual alphabet, numbers 0-100
- Fingerspelling techniques.
About the instructor: Cynthia is a 6th generation Nantucket Island native and recently retired from her family's 400 acre farm, Bartlett's Ocean View Farm. Profoundly deaf since birth, she attended Nantucket Public Schools, had a 1:1 tutor/ notetaker, and took speech therapy from age 18 months to 13 years old. Cynthia has an associate's degree in accounting from National Technical Institute of Technology (NTID), part of Rochester Institute of Technology in NY, where she learned sign language and the deaf culture. She speaks and reads lips well.
