In this course you’ll learn about key elements of writing a mystery novel: Pantser versus plotter, red herrings to keep your readers guessing, critical sections, settings and characters, types of mysteries, and the importance of a first page. There will be a staged crime scene which we will write about and discuss in class. In the last session, we will read our first pages and discuss the different opportunities you have to publish your finished book.
Participants will receive notebooks, handouts, and other items during the course.

About the instructor: Donna Clancy is currently writing a new series, Soap Opera Mysteries, to be published by Level Best Books. She has written multiple mystery series including The Shipwreck Cafe Mysteries and The Jelly Shop Mysteries (self-published) as well as Trash to Treasure Mysteries and Holiday Mysteries (published by Summer Prescott Books). Donna also writes standalone thrillers and romances as well as short stories that have been published in Malice Anthologies and Woman’s World Magazine. She lives on Cape Cod.
